Sami Calamity is a groundbreaking composer/songwriter, fierce multi-instrumentalist, and budding vocalist based in Detroit, MI. Hooked on music from a young age, her study of the saxophone led to a pursuit of jazz at Western Michigan University. While in Kalamazoo, she collaborated on a number of projects from a wide variety of genres, including big band, avant-garde, orchestral pop, funk, hard bop, contemporary classical, singer-songwriter, and cutting-edge modern jazz. After graduating, her mission turned to blending these widely contrasting sounds into a daring project like no other.
Sami’s vocals live at the forefront of this venture. Her imaginative vocal stylings unpredictably oscillate between angelic melodies, fierce growls, and piercing wails. Her undeniable stage presence brings her deeply emotional expressiveness to every performance. Sami’s twisting and highly affected saxophone machinations set against heavy, afrobeat-inspired grooves show off both her compositional intelligence and undeniable knack for making heads bob. Amidst improvisational chaos listeners find order in Sami’s passionate, mystical lyrics that explore deep psychological realms such as obsession, grief, and betrayal.
Sami Calamity is one of my favorite discoveries in quite a while. Brilliant stuff. Creative, original, off the wall, awesome band. Can't wait to see what their future holds. Favorite track: Aelurec.echoesanddust.com:
